LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Lincoln Police Department has had nine vehicles towed since the Vehicle Nuisance Ordinance went into effect on April 15.
The Lincoln City Council unanimously approved the proposal on March 31. It amended the Lincoln Municipal Code to include new definitions and prohibitions for reckless driving and racing.
Examples of those deemed nuisance vehicles and impounded include:
- A 21-year-old man racing on McCormick Drive; the driver was cited for exhibition of speed.
- A 32-year-old man speeding on O Street refusing to pull over when an officer initiated a traffic stop; the vehicle was located at driver’s home and was towed.
- A 20-year-old man observed revving the engine, squealing tires and driving recklessly on O Street; the driver was pulled over and cited for a DUI and willful reckless driving.
- A 20-year-old man accused in two road rage incidents; driver arrested for assault, disturbing the peace, reckless driving and issued citation for disorderly vehicle.
This new law allows LPD to impound vehicles involved in street racing and reckless driving. Vehicles will be towed but can be immediately released after the first violation, along with receiving a written notice. Vehicles will be impounded for 10 days on the second or subsequent violations…
