People’s City Mission one stop closer to building new shelter for women and children

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The People’s City Mission (PCM) is one step closer to building a temporary housing facility for women and children in Lincoln.

The Lincoln Planning Commission approved a special permit on Thursday to expand PCM’s existing special permit boundary to the block south of Q Street. PCM wants to build a new 69,000-square-foot facility between north 1st and 2nd street and P and Q streets.

CEO Pastor Tom Barber said the new facility will house about 300 women and kids, bringing their total capacity to 600. The current building will be remodeled for men only.

It was initially brought up in the Planning Commission’s June 11th meeting but was deferred for two weeks so the applicant and Lincoln Transportation and Utilities could work out a different layout for a truck loading dock.
