Fencing Finds the Spotlight During Cornhusker State Games

LINCOLN, Neb. — Fencing may not always take center stage in Nebraska sports, but for a few days each summer, it becomes the main event.

At Gateway Mall in Lincoln, youth athletes grabbed their swords and took the strip for the Cornhusker State Games’ fencing competition. The unique setting, inside a bustling shopping mall, drew curious onlookers and brought rare visibility to a sport often reserved for Olympic broadcasts.

“Fencing doesn’t usually get a lot of recognition,” said Laura Virgl, President of the Lincoln Fencing Club. “So having it here in such a public space lets people interact with us and see firsthand how fun and exciting the sport really is.”…
