Judge rules murder suspect unfit for trial in Grand Island rest stop killing

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – An Ohio man accused of murder in Nebraska remains in the Lincoln Regional Center unfit to stand trial.

Court records show James Thompson, 22, is accused of killing 72-year-old Gary Weaver of Eureka, MO, in June 2024 at a rest stop near Grand Island. He is charged with murder, assault and five weapons charges.

At a hearing Tuesday, Judge Andrew Butler ruled for the third time that Thompson was incompetent to stand trial and ordered further mental evaluation and treatment for him at the Lincoln Regional Center…
