Lincoln schools welcome kindergarteners early for first time

Lincoln, NE — Lincoln Public Schools welcomed kindergarteners for an early start to the school year, a practice that has been in place for 9th graders for over 15 years and for 6th graders for five years. This initiative aims to help young students acclimate to their new environment.

“We actually had a group of principals come with us with a group of feedback from their teachers that kindergarteners seem like the obvious next step to make sure we get them started off on the right track,” said Dr. Sarah Salem, LPS Associate Superintendent for teaching and learning.

The first day of school marks the beginning of a long educational journey for kindergarteners. “Students in Lincoln Public Schools will go to school over 2,000 days in their K-12 career, and we want their very first day to be memorable, to be special, and to be the reason why they want to come back every day to be around their classmates and their teachers,” said Salem…
