Attempted Extortion Case Through Dating App Being Investigated by Lincoln Police

LINCOLN–(KFOR Aug. 15)–A heads up from Lincoln Police and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

There was an attempted extortion case that was reported to LPD on Thursday by a 24-year-old Lincoln man, who said he was texting with who he thought was a 19-year-old woman through the dating app, Plenty of Fish, when he started to receive explicit photos. According to LPD spokesperson Erika Thomas, the victim got a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, who said the woman was a minor and her parents wanted to press charges.

Thomas says the victim also received texts from other numbers claiming to be the minor’s father, asking for money to avoid criminal action and to pay for therapy. That’s when the victim called LPD. Investigators called the number given by the victim and the voicemail claimed to be Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner. However, the real Sheriff Wagner on Friday said do not rely on those numbers from text and calls, if someone claims to be from law enforcement…
