The Lincoln Children’s Zoo has a new addition. Zoo officials say a Matschie’s tree kangaroo joey was born around April 12 to mom, Judie, and dad, Bexley. At birth Matschie’s tree kangaroos are the size of a lima bean. After they are born, they blindly crawl into mom’s pouch where they continue to develop and grow.
Zoo spokesperson Erin Lenz says they will start to pop their head out of mom’s pouch at around 23 weeks old and will begin to fully venture outside of the pouch a month later. This joey is currently about 26 weeks old.
She says it’s too early to determine whether the joey is a male or a female and the zoo will share that information later and a name will be chosen at that time,” Matschie’s tree kangaroos are an endangered species and face a very high risk of extinction in the wild…
