Northern lights make an appearance throughout Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – From O’Neill to Cordova, and from Lincoln to Mullen, parts of Nebraska are seeing the northern lights Tuesday night.

The sun sent out a huge burst of energy, prompting space weather forecasters to issue a strong geomagnetic storm watch. The sun is at the maximum phase of its 11-year activity cycle, making the light displays more common and widespread.

Aurora displays known as the northern and southern lights are commonly visible near the poles, where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.
