Bryan Community School Students Use Art to Share Mental Health Messages with Lincoln Residents

This fall, students at Bryan Community School in Lincoln, Nebraska, created artwork based on their personal experiences with mental health. The project included students such as Bella, Ivanah, Jurny, Lola, and Manuel. Its goal was to make mental health challenges more visible and relatable. The students’ artwork was displayed in the school’s main hallway. The display included messages intended to support peers facing similar issues.

Several students said the project helped them express their mental health experiences. Bella, Lola, and Manuel described how making art allowed them to process their feelings. Bella spoke about the value of sharing experiences. Lola encouraged others not to hide their feelings. Manuel said it was difficult to show mental health through art but found the process worthwhile.

Art teacher Parker Chollet said he was proud of his Art 1 and 2D Art students. He noted that the project led to more open conversations about mental health among students. Chollet also thanked school counselor Melissa Sellon and the local Kiwanis Club for starting the project.
