Nebraska Master Gardener Program Approaching 50 Years of Community Service and Education

In 2026, the Nebraska Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program will mark its 50th anniversary. The program has provided horticultural education and community service in Nebraska for five decades. Since it began, more than 4,000 Nebraskans have completed training as volunteers. They share gardening knowledge and support local communities through education and stewardship projects.

Nebraska Extension coordinates the program. It offers both in-person and online instruction from University of Nebraska–Lincoln experts. Volunteers receive training in soil health, plant selection, pollinators, turf management, and water conservation.
