Lincoln spreads awareness as cancer becomes leading cause of line-of-duty firefighter deaths

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – As occupational cancer becomes the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among professional firefighters, the city of Lincoln is recognizing that risk firefighters take on and spreading awareness.

At a city council meeting Monday night, members voted 7-0 to proclaim this January, and every subsequent January, Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month.

Councilman James Michael Bowers, who introduced the proclamation, said while it’s easy to talk about the dangers we can see at a fire, we don’t talk often enough about dangers that linger afterward…
