Checks pulled from mail in Gage County, washed, and cashed elsewhere, deputies say

CORTLAND, Neb. (KOLN) – Two Cortland residents have reported fraud involving the theft of checks from mail, according to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

Both residents said they had placed checks in the mail to pay legitimate debts, but at some point along the route, an unknown suspect or suspects had stole the mailed envelopes, “washed out” the payee and the amount, and then cashed the checks at banks out of state.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office said it is aware of similar thefts throughout Nebraska and has contacted the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the federal agency that investigates criminal matters for the U.S. Postal Service…
