‘That’s a pretty big earthquake for Nebraska’; expert reacts to multiple reported earthquakes on Sunday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – If you didn’t feel them, by now you’ve likely at least heard about the Sunday earthquakes and their shock waves that spread from central Nebraska to here in the Capital City.

The earthquake many reported feeling was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) near Cowles, Nebraska, as a magnitude 4.1. Almost an hour and a half later, another nearby earthquake was reported with a magnitude of 2.6. At 8:30 p.m. Sunday, south of where the first two occurred, a third earthquake was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey with a magnitude of 2.6.

“Well, I guess my first thoughts are, ‘That’s a pretty big earthquake for Nebraska,’” said Oliver Boyd, who has been a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey for more than 20 years…
