Two Arkansas teachers vie for National History Day honor — and keep class lively

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Two Arkansas educators are getting a national moment in the spotlight, thanks to National History Day’s Teacher of the Year program, and they’re both finding out just how big an honor (and how much work) the nomination can be.

Jean Hill, of Helen Tyson Middle School, said she was “very pleasantly surprised” to learn she had been nominated for Arkansas National History Day Teacher of the Year in the junior division, which covers grades six through eight. As part of the nomination process, Hill said she worked with students on a lesson using primary sources and extended the research from one of their National History Day projects. She also submitted documentation to the National History Day office, with the understanding that her name would be considered for national recognition if selected.

Hill said she has supported sixth and seventh grade students with projects ranging from U.S. history to world history, including topics from ancient history to more modern history…
