More details revealed on reading requirements for Arkansas third-graders

Little by little, the picture of what reading requirements in the LEARNS Act will do to keep some state third graders from becoming 4th graders is becoming clearer.Arkansas’ re-testing window isn’t closed just yet, so statewide data hasn’t been reported to the media.

But individual districts are sharing how their students have done and how that compares with the state numbers they’ve received.On Tuesday night, board members in the largest school district in the state, Springdale, got a breakdown of how students did on the spring ATLAS test.

To avoid being retained, youngsters needed to score at least a  2  in reading or have an exemption like being on an Individual Education Plan or being an English Language Learner.390 of 403 kids in Springdale secured exemptions…
