The Arkansas Cinema Society has announced that Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey will be honored with Variety’s Legend & Groundbreaker Award during Filmland, the organization’s annual celebration of cinema held at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock.
The award recognizes artists whose careers have reshaped the entertainment industry while standing the test of time. McConaughey’s career easily fits that description. From his breakout performance in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused in 1993 to his upcoming starring role in The Rivals of Amziah King, the Texas-born actor has remained one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and enduring talents.
The event will feature a screening of The Rivals of Amziah King, a new drama that casts McConaughey as the charismatic leader of a bluegrass-playing group of outsiders in rural Oklahoma. In the film, Amziah King oversees the town’s leading honey-making operation while attempting to reconnect with his estranged foster daughter. As the two work toward building a family business, outside threats emerge from rivals determined to take down everything Amziah has created.
Following the screening, McConaughey will participate in a Q&A moderated by Arkansas filmmaker Jeff Nichols, co-founder of the Arkansas Cinema Society and director of acclaimed films including Mud and The Bikeriders. The reunion carries special significance, as Nichols and McConaughey previously collaborated on Mud, making the conversation feel less like a formal interview and more like a homecoming…
