Arkansas reports at least 10 ‘explosive’ diarrhea-causing parasite cyclospora cases in 2026

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials with the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) confirmed on Tuesday that the state has seen 10 cases of cyclosporiasis in 2026.

Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic illness that can cause explosive diarrhea in those who are infected. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach pain or cramps, bloating and increased gas, nausea, feeling very tired, vomiting, body aches, headache and fever. Flu-like symptoms may also be noted, according to ADH officials.

Symptoms may seem to go away and then return one or more times, officials said, with the disease lasting from a few days to a month or more. Infections are confirmed through lab testing.

To date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 1,645 cases of the infection nationwide this year…
