1864 — Civil War action at Kendal’s Grist Mill. Union cavalry encountered Confederate troops in Phillips County during an expedition from Helena intended to disrupt Confederate operations and supplies. One Confederate was captured; no Union casualties were reported.
1875 — Six men hanged at Fort Smith. On September 3, U.S. District Judge Isaac C. Parker’s court carried out its first executions: Daniel Evans, James Moore, William Whittington, Edmund Campbell, Samuel Fooy and Smoker Mankiller were hanged for murders committed in Indian Territory.
