Arkansas History for September 25: Little Rock Nine at Central High

1818 — Osage land cession. At St. Louis, representatives of the Great and Little Osage signed a treaty ceding roughly two million acres in what became Arkansas and Oklahoma, including territory associated with the Arkansas River and Frog Bayou. The Arkansas Secretary of State’s historical land-cession map specifically identifies the September 25, 1818 Osage cession. The treaty also referenced conflict between Osage and Cherokee people.

1864 — Fort Smith Expedition began. Union Maj. Thomas Derry left Little Rock with 385 cavalrymen on September 25 to reopen communications with isolated Fort Smith. The expedition, conducted through central and western Arkansas amid Confederate resistance, ultimately succeeded…
