‘He never met a stranger,’ Remembering NLRFD’s first African American firefighter

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In 1969 James Williams became the first African American to pass through North Little Rock’s training, volunteer and probationary process. He was a trailblazer in the city and after passing at 84 his legacy will undoubtedly live on.

Williams had a loving spirit, in fact he got into firefighting according to one of his daughters Bridgitte Newson, not because it was his dream…rather to support the family.

“He loved us, he loved his family, he loved his work family…he never met a stranger,” Newson said…
