Arkansas mother writes book about son’s overdose death, hopes it will bring awareness to struggles of addiction

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – One Arkansas mother is hoping her story of loss will bring awareness to an epidemic that’s impacting the whole nation.

In 2022, 487 Arkansans died from a drug overdose. It’s a problem that’s facing most of the nation, but people never think it will happen to them until it hits home.

In her new book, Barbara Hanvey shares the painful memories of her son’s death, hoping it will bring awareness to addiction and how we can help stop it.

“It’s like one of those things you never forget,” she said.

Hanvey said she has lived out some of her worst nightmares and she hopes her story will open eyes to problems that are right in front of us.

Hanvey’s son Spencer was an all-American boy. She said he was a baseball star, a great student and had a smile that would bring light into a dark room.

By the time he reached middle school, that all seemed to fade.

“His happiness started going away, his having friends over started going away, he would be in his room more often,” Hanvey said.
