Arkansas State Police: Troopers prevent two suicide attempts Tuesday night

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas State Police troopers were able to prevent two suicide attempts on Tuesday night.

ASP officials said troopers interacted with people contemplating suicide in two separate incidents. In both cases, they were able to establish rapport with the suicidal person and persuade them to abandon their attempt and seek counseling, they said.

The first incident was in Lawrence County. According to ASP officials, the county sheriff’s office had contacted the state police for assistance after a person ran away from officers before jumping a bridge railing on Highway 412 and threatening to jump into the Black River. Officials said two off-duty ASP troopers arrived and persuaded the person to climb down from the bridge.

Later that night, officials said troopers were called to where a man was threatening to jump off the Interstate 40 East bridge into the Mississippi River. A spokesperson said troopers coordinated a response with the Memphis Crisis Intervention Team and one ASP trooper was able to establish rapport with the man, then other troopers pulled the man to safety.
