Millions of cicadas emerging in Arkansas after 13 years underground

CLARK COUNTY, Ark. – A bug that has not been seen in parts of Arkansas for 13 years has made its return.

Black cicadas with red eyes are crawling to the surface along with its own soundtrack, and it has some people all a buzz.

“It’s almost like a contest to see whose house has the loudest cicadas,” Christy Buck said.

‘Cicada-geddon’: Biggest bug emergence in centuries is coming

She lives in the town of Hollywood, Arkansas, and for about three weeks there have been plenty of cicadas making a racket.

“We started slowly hearing them and they got louder and louder and now they’re really loud. It sounds like a bunch of car alarms going off,” Buck said.

Her interest in the new neighbors led to her taking pictures and sharing them online. All her neighbors have encounters of their own they are sharing too.

“I was walking around in my yard and I had them fall out of the tree on me,” Don Buck said. “I don’t particularly like it, but I’m not concerned about it. It doesn’t bother me. I’ll sleep just fine.”
