Officials look to Port of Little Rock expansion for economic growth for region

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – More business, money and opportunities could be headed to Arkansas as officials discuss expanding an important layer of the state’s economy – the Port of Little Rock.

Officials with the port, the city and the Little Rock Regional Chamber talked plans to expand the resource and the impact this will have on overall economic development at an event Tuesday.

The port connects several major businesses to the global economy, and Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. believes its role in economic development has been crucial to the city.

“Little Rock has become very familiar in the logistics hub because of four things: river, rail, road and runway. All intersect in Ward 1,” Scott said.

Noting that expansion of the port is necessary for growing its economic impact, the mayor said a one-cent tax proposal that people can vote on in November could lead to $22 million going to economic incentives with $8 million being dedicated to the port.
