Weather Blog: Light winter mix and massive cold blast coming this weekend!

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — We continue to monitor a powerful storm system along the west coast early this morning, which is expected to bring significant winter weather impacts to a large part of the country.

For Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley, the majority of the precipitation is expected to fall in the form of rain Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Thunderstorms will also be possible, mainly along and south of the I-40 corridor. Most of the severe weather potential will remain off to our south and east, but a few strong storms can’t be ruled out in Scott and Le Flore counties.

As we move throughout the day Sunday, the storm system is expected to eject northeast, allowing arctic air to filter into the region quickly. Temperatures will tank throughout the day, as morning highs in the 40s and 50s will be replaced with afternoon temperatures in the 20s and 30s!

Any leftover moisture in our area could lead to a light wintry mix over portions of far Northwestern Arkansas.
