US Marshals auctioning off Arkansas land once home to ghost towns

CRAWFORD COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) will be auctioning off hundreds of acres of land near Mountainburg on March 13, land that is home to ruins from towns in Arkansas predating World War II.

Part of the 735 acres being auctioned off once belonged to Lance and Lacey Hendrix, a local couple that is hoping the future owners of the land will steward it as a conservation project.

“There are generations of stories — from the railroad itself and the railroad workers who built it, to the town, the timber, the Native Americans, there’s significant history,” Lacey said. “The fact that my family has held it for 50 years, it really has kept all of those pieces in place. So I’m hoping that the right person will come and share that dream, and the right things will be protected.”
