Arkansas celebrates National Preservation Month by ‘Harnessing the Power of Place’ to protect history, strengthen communities

LITTLE ROCK — May is National Preservation Month. Each May, historic preservationists across the country celebrate the work they do to preserve the historic fabric of the communities they live in. This month, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) wants to encourage Arkansans to learn more about what they can do to help preserve the history of their own communities.

This year’s theme is “Harnessing the Power of Place.” Historic places are tangible links between the past and present. They tell their stories to future generations, enrich our lives, strengthen our communities and build the future on solid historical foundations. Preservation is good stewardship of things built by those who came before us and of resources to generate compounding cultural and economic dividends over time.

AHPP Director Scott Kaufman shared, “Harnessing the power of place in Arkansas is focused on protecting and celebrating not only a community’s buildings, but also the community itself.”…
