The Marianna Cut-Off: Brickeys before the Big House

Nowadays, the name of Brickeys, Arkansas usually conjures images of the prison that was built there in the 1990s. There is literally nothing else there these days. But long before such a prison was ever thought of, Brickeys was a small market town for the surrounding farms and plantations, centering around Joe’s Cash Store, which was apparently the center of the community. While there is today a separate post office, it seems likely that the post office was once in the store, which occupies what would be nearly an entire city block if Brickeys were an ordinary town.
