Conway School Board writes big check, says goodbye to superintendent

CONWAY, Ark. – The Conway School Board made a six-figure decision on personnel at a specially-called Sunday meeting.

The board entered into a separation agreement with its then-Superintendent, Jeff Collum, following a special session that lasted over two hours. As part of the agreement, Collum will be paid $461,000 by January.

Board member Linda Hargis explained that the amount was due to the two remaining years on his contract, which was for more than the agreed-upon settlement amount. Part of the money, $61,500, was already owed to Collum on a previous agreement, board member Dr. David Naylor Jr. said.

Two members, Trip Leach and Barrett Petty, voted against the separation, citing the expense. They both felt the money could be better spent in classrooms. They were given an opportunity to speak on their reasoning by Board President Sheila Franklin…
