ARDOT closing interstate ramps to test wrong-way detection system

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) – The Arkansas Department of Transportation will shut down several interstate off-ramps to make sure everyone is going in the right direction.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, the highway department will close the following off-ramps on Interstate 40 to test its wrong-way detection systems:

  • Westbound, Exit 243 (Forrest City Rest Area)
  • Westbound, Exit 247
  • Westbound, Exit 256
  • Westbound, Exit 260
  • Eastbound, Exit 265
  • Eastbound, Exit 271
  • Westbound, Exit 271

The closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, July 22, to Wednesday, July 23
  • Wednesday, July 23, to Thursday, July 24
  • Thursday, July 24, to Friday, July 25

Only one ramp will be closed at a time, with plans to complete three to four ramps per night, according to Friday’s news release.

“Wrong-way detection systems include vehicle sensors, closed-circuit television cameras, illuminators, hardware controllers, warning devices, and communications equipment that notify motorists if they are traveling in the wrong direction,” ARDOT said…
