What to know when approaching stopped buses in school zones

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It is that time of the year again. And whether you are in Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas, the rules for school zones and buses are simple but serious.

It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus. All lanes must stop unless there is a physical median separating you from the bus. And drivers must stop at least 25 feet away.

School zones are always 20 miles per hour when lights are flashing or children are present. You must obey every crossing guard and sign.

And just a heads up, the fines are no joke. In Tennessee alone, speeding in a school zone comes with a minimum $250 ticket. Failing to stop for a bus or ignoring a crossing guard can cost you even more…
