Little Rock woman hailed as hero for life-saving stem cell donation

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Carly Jo Riggins, a former University of Central Arkansas student, is being celebrated as a life-saving hero after donating blood stem cells to a stranger battling a serious blood-related illness. Regan registered as a donor with DKMS in 2015, not expecting her decision would one day save a life.

“They told me it was less than a 1% chance that I would ever match with somebody,” Riggins said. “So I did it, honestly, not thinking anything of it, and completely forgot about it until I got the call last November.”

Riggins’ decision to donate was influenced by personal loss. “I was also kind of coming off the heels of my best friend had passed away from ovarian cancer, and my grandfather had also passed away that same year,” she said. “To love somebody who has cancer, and to watch them go through that is a very helpless feeling.”…
