Survivor of kidney failure to run Chicago Marathon, inspiring others

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Trena Mitchell’s journey from a hospital bed to the Chicago Marathon is nothing short of remarkable. In 2021, Mitchell faced a life-threatening health crisis when a large fibroid tumor in her uterus caused her kidney to fail.

“I was scared. I was optimistic, and I was also hopeful,” she said, recalling her time in the hospital. After undergoing a partial hysterectomy, Mitchell was determined to reclaim her health. She began running, inspired by a local gym trainer, and has since completed several races.

Mitchell is set to run her fourth marathon, the Chicago Marathon, with Team Abbott. “Abbott Health provided an opportunity for people like me who don’t really qualify for a marathon to run,” she said…
