11 Strong Beliefs Arkansas Natives Stand By (And Always Will)

When it comes to living in Arkansas, there is never a dull moment. Chances are, there are a few things that you will defend about the state no matter what. Of course, there are certain things that many Arkansans won’t agree with, but for the most part, the majority of folks will die on these hills. Whether it’s the beloved Razorbacks, the swimming holes, or the delicious food, these are just a few of the things that Arkansans love the most. And since those arguments are legit, let’s explore these eight treasured hills to die on in Arkansas. They represent what life in the Natural State is really like.

1. It’s Ar-KANSAW, Not Ar-KANSAS – Say It the Right Way!

And when you refer to us, we’ll accept Arkansan (KANSAN) or Arkansawyer, but stay away from Arkansian because we don’t know who came up with that foolishness. As long as you don’t pronounce Arkansas as ArKANSAS (Kansas), we’ll let you in. For reference, it’s pronounced ‘Ar-kan-saw, ’ just like the locals say it.

2. Yes, Chocolate Gravy Is Real – And It’s Delicious!

Nobody really knows the origin of chocolate gravy, but hats off to whoever decided to create this sweet breakfast staple. If you’re not from around these parts, it’s likely this is foreign to you. But do know that eating chocolate gravy feels like you’re getting a hug from grandma. Did you know this Southern favorite is especially popular in the Ozark region? That’s where family recipes are passed down through generations.

3. We’ll Jump Into Just About Any Swimming Hole We Find

Of course, y’all know that we have no “beaches” here in Arkansas, but that doesn’t stop us from swimming and cooling off during the warmer months. If the water is clear and deep enough to float, paddle, or swim in, no doubt, we will get in it. Popular spots like Blanchard Springs and Buffalo National River are among the locals’ favorite swimming destinations.

4. In Arkansas, Hunting Is a Tradition – Deer Season Is a Celebration

Yes, we love to hunt here in the Natural State, and when it comes to deer season, it’s like a rite of passage for some of us. Many people will religiously plan their vacation around the season. In many ways, that camo and rifle are king. But if you don’t like hunting, no worries! The fall season brings stunning forest colors and plenty of opportunities for hiking and photography.

5. Arkansas Serves Up the Best Fried Catfish in the South

We can all agree we love fried catfish, but we will argue over which restaurant has the best. Some people will swear by their local mom and pop restaurant, while others might argue for a fried catfish buffet in their town. Regardless of where in Arkansas you get the catfish, chances are, you’ve eaten the best fried catfish, and that’s all that matters. 7. Arkansans Have Their Own Way of Talking – Y’all Better Get Used to It

Seriously, who has time to waste on saying “You All” or “You Guys?” Let’s face it, using “y’all” makes more sense, and that’s why we will always stick with it. Y’all know what I mean…enough said! Even though it’s part of the Southern charm, whether you say ‘y’all’ or not, you’ll still be welcome here.

8. The Razorbacks – Fans for Life!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! PIG!!! SOOIE!! RAZORBACKS!!! This famous chant is heard across the state on game days. And, it shows just how deep Arkansas’s team spirit runs. Check out these unique trivia facts about Arkansas.

9. Small-Town Living Is the Good Life – No Big City Rush Needed

From knowing our neighbors to open spaces, Arkansans love their peace. Whether it’s attending local festivals, exploring small-town charm, or gathering in a stadium to watch Friday night football, it’s what defines who we are. Well, cities have their perks, but we’ll take front porch sittin’ and firefly nights any day.

10. Sweet Tea Runs in Our Veins – Keep the Unsweetened Away

In Arkansas, sweet tea isn’t just a drink but rather a way of life. If you try to give us unsweet tea, we’ll sure hand it back – politely but firmly. It doesn’t matter whether it’s homemade or from a local diner – that first icy sip on a sunny day is pure Southern comfort.

11. We Take Our BBQ Seriously – And No, Memphis Doesn’t Do It Better

It’s true that everyone has their go-to BBQ joint. And, yes, every Arkansan has an opinion about which one reigns supreme. Whether it’s pulled pork smoked to perfection or ribs dripping in tangy sauce, you haven’t tasted authentic BBQ until you’ve had it in Arkansas.
