Earle mayor urges Arkansas Governor to act on looming SNAP cuts

Earle, Ark. (WMC) – City of Earle, Arkansas, Mayor Jaylen Smith is calling on Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to take emergency action in response to possible Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit cuts.

On Wednesday, Mayor Smith sent a certified letter to the governor’s office requesting a statewide disaster proclamation to help protect Arkansas families, especially those in rural communities, from the impact of a potential lapse in federal nutrition assistance.

As many of you know, the upcoming changes to SNAP are expected to affect some of the most vulnerable members of our community, including children, seniors, and low-income families. The reality is that rural towns like ours often face unique challenges, and we do not have the budget or resources to absorb the effects of these cuts. It’s time for our state and federal leaders to step up and take responsibility…
