East Arkansas mayor calls on Gov. Sanders to address SNAP benefit cuts

Earle, Arkansas, Mayor Jaylen Smith is urging state Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to issue a statewide disaster proclamation regarding the lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the state of Arkansas.

In his letter, Smith notes that over 240,000 Arkansans, including around 150,000 children, rely on SNAP to put food on their tables, going further to say that a lack of funding would be disastrous to those individuals, especially those living in rural communities, where access to food is much more limited.

Smith also states that a statewide disaster proclamation would allow municipal and state officials to prepare for and lessen the impact of the federal funding lapse, allowing the State of Arkansas to use emergency resources and state tax dollars to make up for the missing funds…
