LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Daisy Gatson Bates, a pivotal figure in Arkansas’ civil rights history, is being celebrated on what would have been her 111th birthday.

Known as the “mother of civil rights” in Arkansas, Bates played a crucial role in the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957 by guiding the Little Rock Nine.
