NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark.— Residents at Shorter College Gardens continue to face uncertainty as city and federal leaders work to relocate dozens of families after the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ended its contract with the complex due to unsafe living conditions.
Mayor Terry Hartwick said the city discovered that the property’s owners had failed to pay utility bills, leaving tenants without hot water and facing potential shutoffs.
“Of course, we found out that there was 70 vouchers out there. The company that owns the building was not paying their bills. Meanwhile, the city of North Little Rock, we turned their electricity back on so that they would have hot water, and then the water department turned it on so they could have hot water,” Hartwick said.
