Arkansas sees worst outbreak of whooping cough in 20 years, infants at risk

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — The flu usually takes center stage this time of year, but Arkansas is also seeing more reported cases of whooping cough than it has in roughly two decades.

Whooping cough cases are rising nationwide, already causing three infant deaths in Kentucky, and leaving Arkansas healthcare providers afraid that the same could happen here.

“And that’s certainly the fear here, right? As our numbers continue to rise, there’s a certain inevitability in that, which was just really hard to think about for our patients and our families,” said Dr. Joshua Lyon, a pediatrician at the All For Kids Pediatric Clinic in Little Rock…
