First Alert: Winter storm bringing snow, brutal cold to Region 8

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) -While it’s still several days away, Meteorologist Kristina Balentine says now is the time to prepare for a weekend winter storm.

“Snow could move into Region 8 as early as Friday evening, but some places may see little to no snowfall until Saturday morning,” she said. “Once it starts snowing, it will likely continue until Sunday morning.”

While it’s too far out to say exactly how much snow will fall, the K8 StormTeam is expecting some accumulation.

“We’ll be able to fine tune the forecast as we get closer to the event,” Balentine said, adding that some areas could also see a bit of sleet as the system exits Region 8.

In addition to the snow weather, those living in Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri will also have to contend with brutally cold temperatures.

“We’ll likely be below freezing for over 100 hours, causing pipes to freeze and burst,” Balentine said. “The extended cold will also make it more difficult for the snow to melt, so travel impacts could last into next week.”
