Oftentimes, I find myself admiring how beautiful nature is. Yet, I must give humans credit for the stunning buildings that we have created. When humans and nature collaborate—it’s downright magical. That’s where the Midred B Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista comes in. This hidden gem in Arkansas is not just a gorgeous chapel in the woods; it’s a sacred sanctuary of peace and an Arkansas legacy. Let’s take a walk through this historic chapel to admire its beauty.
History of This Woodland Chapel
Sister to Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, which we covered previously, the Mildred B Cooper Memorial Chapel (also known as Cooper Chapel) is just about perfect. Tucked inside the woodlands near Lake Norwood in NWA, this relic is a memorial to its namesake (Mildred B. Cooper), who was deeply spiritual and had a great love for nature. Built in 1988, the chapel was designed by E. Fay Jones, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, a prominent American architect. While this masterpiece is a tourist attraction for visitors, for Arkansans, it’s a place to pray, celebrate special events, and a destination for folks to gather in harmony.
Step Inside the Architectural Masterpiece
One of Arkansas’s most stunning and historic places, Cooper Chapel, is a must-visit wonder. As the Natural State, Arkansas is known for its towering waterfalls, rolling hills, and awe-inspiring views, but this majestic chapel is just as impressive. The moment you set eyes on this architectural masterpiece, you’ll understand how magnificent it truly is. The breathtaking entrance is made of glass and steel, but I love that it feels like part of the forest. Not to mention that it’s perched on a hill in the woods, overlooking Lake Norwood, a peaceful 33-acre oasis with walking paths.
You’ll immediately notice that the unique woodland chapel was inspired by old Gothic cathedrals, built using glass and steel, featuring 15 towering arches that reach 50 feet high. The dramatic vaulted ceiling makes a bold statement of its own and demands your full attention. While admiring the wooden accents along with the glass fixtures, you’ll feel like this enchanting man-made chapel is woven into the Ozark woodlands. This one-of-a-kind creation will inspire folks from all walks of life, and I could imagine fairytale endings happening here.
While you visit, you can meditate, connect, reflect, pray, or simply soak up the views. The family hopes that the chapel inspires people as much as Mildred B. Cooper herself did, and they have provided a beautiful way to make sure that generation after generation experiences her legacy, her love of nature, and her deep spirituality. Be sure to visit during normal business hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so that you can step inside.
Savor the Natural and Man-Made Beauty
Depending on when you visit, you’ll be immersed in pretty landscapes. In the warmer months, expect to be surrounded by lush greenery and wildflower blooms. In the fall, the forest comes alive with autumn hues, and if it snows in the winter, the chapel is downright dreamy. Since Cooper Chapel is less known than Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, you could possibly have this serene sanctuary to yourself. It’s one of those places that after you visit, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve discovered something sacred, right here in Arkansas.
Beyond the chapel, there is a scenic half-mile path that is wheelchair-friendly, stroller-friendly, and dogs on leash are welcomed, too. Expect views of the tranquil lake along the way. You’ll want to have your camera ready to snap pics of the chapel and the surrounding landscapes in the Ozarks. Carve out two hours to explore the trail and to spend time inside the chapel. If you’ve never spent the day in Bella Vista, then make this woodland chapel your reason to visit. It’s one of Arkansas’s best-kept secrets and a wonderful place for the entire family to enjoy.
