On April 22, 1874, Governor Elisha Baxter told President Ulysses S. Grant he would call the legislature into session to resolve the rival claims to Arkansas’s governorship, and Grant replied that he approved a peaceful settlement. That exchange helped move the state away from open armed conflict and toward the end of Reconstruction-era Republican rule in Arkansas.
