Denver moves closer to allowing bars to stay open until 4 a.m., without extending ‘last call’

A Denver City Council committee advanced a proposal Tuesday that would allow bars and clubs to stay open until 4 a.m., two hours after “last call for alcohol.”

The plan, put forward by the city’s Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, would be the first comprehensive overhaul of Denver’s entertainment licensing rules in decades. Alcohol service would still end at 2 a.m. under state law, but venues could keep music, dancing and other entertainment going for two additional hours.

City officials said the extended hours would stagger the crowds that pour out of bars at the current 2 a.m. closing time, reducing the congestion and fights that currently concentrate in areas like Lower Downtown and the Ballpark District. Denver Police are on board with the proposal…
