Probationary sentence for man convicted in Jeffco case where teen was shot

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A former town council member has been sentenced to four years of probation after a jury found he committed assault when shooting a 17-year-old boy in the face in 2024, which he called an “accident.”

On June 1, the Jefferson County jury found Brent Metz guilty of third-degree assault — a lesser charge than the second-degree assault count he faced — and illegal discharge of a firearm. He was found not guilty on two counts of menacing, as well as the original second-degree assault charge. He had been arrested in 2024 after authorities said he shot at a teenager who was helping his friend find a spot to take homecoming pictures in Conifer.

The two teens hopped the fence on Metz’s property before realizing no one was home. The boys then walked back down the driveway and to their car parked on the road, where they began to write a note they intended to leave for the homeowners.
