Seven months after the City of Denver set off an uproar over its plans to slim down a four-lane traffic arterial for a mile-long stretch north of Washington Park, “Coming Soon” signs are up along E. Alameda Avenue, as Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says it is ready to start the project.
That’s earning kudos from representatives of the bike community and from one set of neighbors near the project. But the launch is unlikely to please commuters who have few alternatives other than Alameda to cross a busy city area with no freeways nearby.
The city’s original “lane repurposing project” along Alameda was presented last summer as narrowing a 12-block stretch from S. Logan Street east to S. Franklin Street to just two lanes, using some of the recovered street space to create dedicated left turn lanes at a few intersections…
