Boy killed in shooting in park south of Thornton late Saturday night, deputies say

A boy has died in a late-night shooting at a park in unincorporated Adams County Saturday, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting occurred at Rotella Park, an Adams County park located just south of Thornton, near Coronado Parkway South and York Street.

In a posting on social media platform X, Adams County Sheriff’s officials said they received a call for a shooting at 11:18 p.m.

An Adams County Sheriff’s deputy spokesperson told The Denver Gazette gunshots were fired toward a group of seven juveniles at the park. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

The boy who was shot received life-saving measures at the scene, where he soon died, the deputy spokesperson said. His name and age will be released by the Adams County coroner’s office.

A man was also shot in the leg during the incident. Deputies said he was walking by as a bystander. His condition was not released.

Deputies on Sunday said the shooting investigation remains ongoing, adding they are interviewing family members and witnesses. No arrests have been made, deputies said.
