Colorado’s longest-tenured school resource officer builds special bonds with students

SHERIDAN, Colo. ( KDVR ) — If there was one person who has dedicated their life to serving others, it would be Officer Ken Chavez with the Sheridan Police Department.

Chavez has served as a school resource officer for 27 years — the longest in Colorado — and he is nowhere close to retiring.

“This is Adrian. He took a picture of me on Christmas, bought him a present. That’s Adrian — he’s a good boy,” said Chavez about one of the students at Sheridan High School.

Chavez said they are all good kids; all they need is a little love and guidance.

“You can see, I am really informal with the kids. I think that’s why I’ve been successful. I don’t come on too strong with them. I’m friendly, and I joke with them quite a bit,“ said Chavez.

Joking aside, the students know he truly cares for them.

“He’s like a father figure. He’s always there for us when we need someone. He lets us go into his office when we go through tough moments,“ said one student.
