Denver weather: Cold weather expected across Colorado with snow in the mountains

DENVER — Get ready for a cold Sunday across Colorado with most locations remaining below freezing the entire day. We’ll see some lingering snow in the northern and central mountains into the early afternoon with an additional 1-4 inches possible. The highest totals will generally be along and north of Interstate 70.

The coldest air in the state by this afternoon will be found on the far northeast plains, where some locations may not even get out of the teens. Eastern Colorado is on the edge of an arctic air mass sitting over the middle of the nation. It will be cold at the Broncos game with temperatures in the middle 20s.

If you’re traveling out of state today and headed east, you will encounter a potent winter storm that is basically following Interstate 70, from Kansas all the way to the east coast. In the warm sector of the system, strong to severe thunderstorms are likely today from Louisiana to Alabama.

Looking ahead, Monday should be fairly quiet around the region but a new weather system will impact us by Tuesday, when more snow could fall in Denver. The timing could mean a rough drive for the morning commute so be sure to keep in touch with us for the latest forecast information.
