Colorado man sues for ‘malicious prosecution’ after he was acquitted of murder

MONTE VISTA, Colo. — A high-profile murder trial in this city ended nearly two years ago, and now the man who was accused of killing his girlfriend is taking on the public officials who played a role in the death investigation and murder trial.

Jimmy Lee Garcia stood with his family and attorneys on Tuesday outside of a federal courthouse in Denver to announce a lawsuit against the City of Monte Vista, police officers, a prosecutor and a coroner.

Garcia is represented by attorney Mari Newman, who filed the lawsuit that says the death of Garcia’s girlfriend was initially ruled a suicide after she was found dead by hanging in 2014…
