‘This is a developing trend’: Colorado agency offers help preventing key fob cloning

DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado agency is seeing a “developing trend” of auto thefts happening throughout the country and some “isolated” cases in the state; however, there are ways Colorado drivers can protect their vehicles.

“Key fob cloning” is an auto theft method where a device can be used to capture or replicate radio frequency signals transmitted by key fobs.

In June, two men were arrested by federal authorities in connection to a national auto theft ring that primarily targeted and stole vehicles in major airports, including Denver. Authorities said the thefts happened through the use of a device that could “clone key fobs” or authorize access to vehicles.
